A frumious mid-game beast in BLACK SOULS — and a returning teacher in BLACK SOULS II, where it teaches you the Devour Corpse technique.

Where and when

Bandersnatch guards the Wonderland library approach. The encounter can be bypassed by cancelling the initial selection, so completion and Vernai's summon flag require choosing the fight deliberately.

Location

Wonderland, at the library entrance.

Prerequisites

  • Reach the Wonderland library approach.
  • If completing Vernai's route, summon him before accepting the fight.

Attack cues and responses

Cue / pattern
The beast uses fast, punishing physical pressure.
The Dark Wood Ring's acrobat evasion is a documented route answer; poison or dung-style damage can shorten the exposure window.
The opening selection appears before combat.
Cancelling bypasses the encounter. Accept only after the correct summon is active if you need the quest flag.

Loadout

  • Equip the Dark Wood Ring when using the evasion plan.
  • Bring poison or other reliable damage-over-time if the direct damage race is unfavorable.
  • Save before the selection so a missed Vernai summon can be corrected.

Rewards

  • 1,000,000 souls
  • Titanite Slab
  • Bandersnatch achievement
  • One of Vernai's three required summon flags when he is summoned

Route risks

  • Cancelling the selection bypasses the fight rather than completing it.
  • Killing the boss without Vernai closes that Moonlight Greatsword requirement for the cycle.

First-hand verification backlog

Capture these in one documented Steam-version run before this page becomes indexable:

  • Library entrance and bypass selection
  • Dark Wood Ring evasion result
  • Vernai summon confirmation
  • Reward screen

Context and planning notes

In the first game, Bandersnatch is a mid-route hunt defeated by 30.6% of players — harder than the fairy-tale bosses around it, easier than the endgame saints.

In BLACK SOULS II, seek it out to learn "Devour Corpse" ("Devouring Beast", 41.5%) — one of the sequel's signature survival techniques. The beast that hunted you becomes the thing that teaches you to feed.
