The first great wall of BLACK SOULS — and a boss you will meet more than once. Helkaiser is the most-defeated boss in the game, and his Rotting and Undead forms return at later points of the story as harder rematches.

Where and when

Drake Helkaiser is the opening Fort Ivern boss. Losing the first encounter still advances the opening, but returning to the fort lets you take the fight again for its rewards.

Location

Fort Ivern, during the opening escape; rematch at the same fort after the route opens again.

Prerequisites

  • No quest item is required for the opening encounter.
  • For the reward clear, return after the forced opening sequence instead of treating the first loss as permanent.

Attack cues and responses

Cue / pattern
A physical strike is prepared immediately before the enemy turn.
Use the game's parry response on the turn before impact rather than trying to trade damage.
Helkaiser inhales before the breath attack.
Use an evasion response for the breath turn; ordinary guarding is the less reliable answer.

Loadout

  • Carry enough healing to survive a learning attempt and keep a separate parry/evasion turn available.
  • If early damage is too low, clear nearby encounters and improve the weapon before taking the rematch.

Rewards

  • 8,000 souls
  • Titanite Chunk
  • Black Soul
  • Drake Sword

Route risks

  • Losing the opening encounter advances the story, but it does not erase the later rematch.
  • The opening loss should not be recorded as a reward clear; verify the inventory after the rematch.

First-hand verification backlog

Capture these in one documented Steam-version run before this page becomes indexable:

  • Opening arena and later rematch entrance
  • Inhale cue immediately before breath
  • Parry timing against the physical strike
  • Reward screen and inventory entries

Context and planning notes

As the most-defeated boss in the game (56.4% of players), Helkaiser is the tutorial in what BLACK SOULS expects of you: watch patterns, don't greed hits, and accept that dying is part of the loop.

His later forms — Rotting (43.3%) and Undead (33.3%) — track the story's decay. Each rematch adds pressure rather than new gimmicks, so the fundamentals you learn here keep paying off.

If you are stuck, level through nearby areas first; BLACK SOULS is an RPG at heart, and a few levels change these fights dramatically.

Variants

  • Rotting Drake Helkaiser (43.3%)
  • Undead Drake Helkaiser (33.3%)
